On March 4th, Disney applied for a patent that could bring video game level interactivity to the streaming services like Disney+ or Netflix.

Disney’s “Cloud-based Image Rendering for Video Stream Enrichment” patent application hopes to solve the difficulties others have encountered trying to achieve this goal.

Traditionally, interactivity has been added by coding layers of game-like features over the streaming video, not within.  The problem with this old method is the container code must be rewritten every time new features are added.

Disney hopes to eliminate this issue.  Their solution involves a “video enrichment unit” that receives the stream and adds interactivity based on the preferences of the user.  It will then present the interactive content based upon these preferences.

Additionally, this interactive content, based on preferences, will be individualized across multiple user profiles within the streaming service membership.  A child’s profile will have different interactivity than an adult’s profile.
