Scientific Games has announced the completion of its acquisition of Sweden-based Elk Studios

Scientific says its gaming content portfolio has now been strengthened, and Elk’s content will soon be rolled-out across the North American market.

The Stockholm-based Elk specializes in content for mobile games and has previously launched three successful titles: Katmandu, Cygnus and Wild Toro II. In addition, Elk’s “X-iter” is a tech feature that gives gamers the ability to manipulate in-game scenarios, allowing for more user engagement, and potentially more game play and ad revenue.

Barry Cottle, CEO of Scientific said, “acquiring Elk Studios demonstrates once again our commitment to make targeted, value enhancing investments designed to advance our cross-platform content capabilities…

“The highly synergistic combination of their top-ranked games and our leading OpenGaming ecosystem offers exciting distribution opportunities in the US and Canada.”

Scientific Games Corporation trades on the NASDAQ with a $6 billion market capitalization, under the ticker: SGMS

Terms of the Elk deal have yet to be disclosed.

However, the Elk acquisition comes after Scientific acquired Authentic Gaming and Lightning Box. The company is steering itself into a more gaming focused growth strategy after selling its lottery business and divesting itself from its OpenBet sports betting business.

Scientific Games may be on the lookout for further acquisition opportunities.

Scientific, as well as other larger gaming companies, have been on an acquisition spree this year. Recently targeted companies include smaller game developers and publishers, especially companies with unique in-game technology like Elk’s “X-iter.”

In-game tech is red hot, and the next wave of acquisition targets may include companies with patented in-game tech. Big players may already be seeking in-game tech that allows for real-world transactions and ecommerce. This is a sorely missing component of current game tech, and a vital component for future growth in the space.
