Sony Interactive Entertainment has taken a big step in social gaming by investing in Discord, the social chat network preferred by gamers.
Sony said the two teams are already working together to help integrate the social media platform directly into the PlayStation.
SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan sad “Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year… allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”
Discord launched in 2015 and has accumulated more than 140 million monthly active users. Just this past March, the company was in talks with Microsoft as part of an acquisition deal, valuing Discord at $10 billion.
Discord, however, walked away from the table with the idea of pursuing an IPO instead. This coup by Sony is a blow to Microsoft’s gaming segment, best known for their Xbox consoles and games.
Social gaming is the next big wave for the industry. And this investment by Sony into Discord puts them well ahead of the competition.
However, a new social gaming feature may soon launch. This new feature, called in-game commerce, could expand gaming related revenues buy hundreds of billions of dollars.
