Apple iPhone users, and users of all Apple iOS operating systems, who download apps and purchase goods within them may soon have an alternative
In an effort to pre-empt any judgement in the Apple V. Epic antitrust case, Apple says it will allow transactions services for Apple users, outside of the app store.
Right now, developers must pay between 15% and 30% of all in-app purchases, to Apple. Epic games has taken Apple to court fighting these fees as monopolistic.
Now, Apple says iOS users who pay for in-app goods may receive an email from the app developer alerting them to new, out-of-app payment methods, bypassing the App Store.
Developers would have to email their users (opted in only) with user consent, and the users must have an opt-out opportunity in order for Apple to agree.
The move by Apple not only looks to perhaps show antitrust litigators that the company is serious about allowing competition, but could lower the costs for app developers and publishers across the globe.
