Google is countersuing Epic Games in response to Project Liberty

Project Liberty was a 2020 plan by Epic Games to add alternative payment methods to Android & iOS versions of Fortnite. Epic stated that big platform-holders, such as Apple & Google, were operating monopolies & should allow developers and gaming companies choice in whom processes in-app transactions.

Going into their countersuite of Epic, Google has a stronger starting argument than Apple. Google does not operate in such a closed system as iOS and Android users and developers are not forced to use Google Play to download or distribute apps.

According to Google’s lawyer, “Android gives app developers and smartphone consumers more openness and choice than any other major competitor.”

Google wants Epic to be found liable for breach of contract & wants the courts to declare that Epic was unjustly enriched by its actions and give that money back to Google.
