Fortnite maker, Epic Games is buying Bandcamp, an online music store that supports independent musical acts

While consolidation within the video game industry has been occurring at a record pace, the addition of Bandcamp to Epic’s portfolio shows how the industry is broadening horizons beyond just game-tech.

Now, Epic will have access to music and artists it can promote and play through nearly all its titles, while Bandcamp’s artists receive more exposure.

The company, best known for Fortnite and Unreal Engine, says it shares a mission with Bandcamp in building an artist friendly platform where creators can keep the bulk of the revenue created by their works, while introducing new music to the world.

Moving beyond just games, Epic is looking to develop a “marketplace ecosystem for content, technology, games, art, music and more.”

Bandcamp will remain independent of Epic as a standalone company and will continue to be led by current CEO Ethan Diamond. Mr. Diamond said, “Bandcamp’s mission is to help spread the healing power of music by building a community where artists thrive through the direct support of their fans…

“In Epic, we’ve found a partner who believes as deeply as we do that the future of music, and art itself, depends on the creation of equitable and inclusive communities like the one our fans and artists have helped to build. We’re excited to work alongside the Epic team to accelerate the realization of our mission and pursue our shared goal of empowering more creators in a fair and open way.”
