The biggest video game industry headline of 2022 has been Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard

It was massive, for sure. But there have been dozens of other acquisitions that have not garnered the same attention as the Microsoft/Activision deal, simply because they’ve been much smaller.

Already in 2022, the industry is nearing $100 billion in M&A deals. These deals have occurred across companies of all sizes, and represent a new, all-time record in industry M&A value.

Now, legendary game maker, Atari, is acquiring video game database company, MobyGames for $1.5 million. A smaller deal, yes. But yet another deal to add to the record breaking 2022.

MobyGames has been storing and categorizing a video game database that goes back all the way to the 1950’s. It has thousands of resources and titles catalogued, including data almost every Nintendo game ever released.

Of the Moby purchase, Atari CEO Wade Rosen said, “The MobyGames community has played a sustained and important role in the documentation, celebration, and preservation of video games, and supporting MobyGames allows us to give back to the community and contribute to its growth and success.”

“It’s important to Atari that MobyGames retains every bit of its integrity, and we’re committed to supporting the site in ways that improve the experience for both contributors and users.”

Jeremiah Freyholtz, General Manager of MobyGames, noted, “In Atari, MobyGames has found a partner that will provide the investment and support we need to complete long-planned site improvements. I am confident this transition will allow MobyGames to remain an important community-driven project and that Atari’s involvement best positions us for long-term stability and success.”

There has been so much M&A activity in the industry, its no surprise Atari is getting in on the action. Even with this small $1.5 million purchase, the company could be looking to upgrade its investment and games portfolio by acquiring additional companies.
